Good news for New Year’s resolutions!
If “work off all that Holiday eating” and “give back to the community” are featured high on your list of New Year’s resolutions this year, then we have good news. A long journey home:
Stefano’s big victory
Appearances can be deceiving. The first year of a child’s life is without a doubt a period of great vulnerability. However, as you will read in the following story, newborns can also show incredible resilience, sometimes even against all odds. Born on December 1, 2009, Stefano Ruvo was transferred to The Children’s at three days of age when doctors saw that he couldn’t breathe on his own. After undergoing extensive tests, Stefano was diagnosed with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS), a rare condition of the central nervous system.

Building a new Children's
We’ve been heading out to the Glen Campus every couple of weeks to document the progress of the construction of our new Hospital, and we were so impressed by the rapid progress of the construction that we decided to share it with you in a new photo album. It’s exciting to see how fast things are moving; only one short year ago we were breaking ground, and now the Glen is the most active construction site in Quebec, with nine cranes visible for miles around. Take a look at the album, and check back often – one brick at a time a brand new Children’s is taking shape, and we couldn’t be more proud to share it with you every step of the way!

April 1 will remain an incredible date for all of those who hold The Children’s close to their heart. On that day we learned the name of the consortium that will build our brand new Children’s on the Glen Campus: Groupe immobilier santé McGill. Construction of our new Hospital has now begun. When I accepted to chair The Best Care for Children Campaign four years ago, it was impossible for us to fully envision what our new Hospital would be. All we could say with certainty was that our existing facilities could not allow us to continue offering world class care, for which The Children’s is known, much longer. Thanks to the proposal of Groupe immobilier santé McGill the benefits of our new Children’s are clearer than ever before.

pyjamas for our youngest of patients
Upon seeing the cover of the fall edition of le Children Magazine, the people at Lemure group, importer of children's pyjamas, received a pleasant surprise. Featured on the cover was baby Blake Mearns (see Starting life at 910 grams!) who happened to be wearing a pair of Lemure Group’s pyjamas! Although there were no visible logos, the company had no trouble recognizing their product. Touched by Blake’s story, Lemure were compelled to give to The Children’s. The decided to make a donation of pyjamas to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to go to other babies like Blake. In addition, they also purchased nearly $1500 in Christmas cards from the Foundation. Thank you to Lemure group and thank you to Blake!
your aeroplan miles at work
Through the Kids'Horizons program, Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz provide complimentary flights to 15 Canadian pediatric hospitals to help children receive medical treatments that are unavailable in their region.
The Kids'Horizons program enables families who live more than 250 km from a hospital to benefit from air transportation that they would not otherwise be able to afford. At The Children’s, in 2007, 1 330 000 Aeroplan miles were donated to families in such a situation. We would not have been able to assist these families without this great program.

gratitude and the holiday season
Message from Louise Dery-Goldberg
The frenzy of activity during the Holiday Season can be exhausting. Between finding gifts, preparing meals, and sending good wishes, there does not seem to be enough hours in the day. Thankfully, this is not the case for the many individuals and companies who find the time to spread holiday cheer at The Children’s. Throughout the month of December, they come bearing wonderful gifts for our young patients, illustrating yet again the community’s great affection for our Hospital. Thanks to their generosity, each child hospitalized during the holidays will receive ...

now is the time to make a publicly listed security donation
Publicly listed security donations are becoming quite a hot topic, and for good reason. Income tax legislation makes this type of donation far more advantageous. Since 2006, the inclusion rate for taxable capital gains on such a donation has gone from 25 % to 0 %. Therefore, a donor who gives securities to a registered charitable organization will not pay any tax on capital gains accumulated over the years. This is good news for both you and the Foundation alike. But hurry, the 31 of December is fast approaching!

on solid ground
Message from Marc Courtois
The construction of the new Montreal Children’s Hospital will be financed and achieved thanks to a public-private partnership (PPP). The Quebec government announced its decision on June 18, and defined the model that will govern the construction of the McGill University Health Centre on the Glen site. The Request for Qualifications (which will determine the firms which may bid on the project) was announced soon afterwards. We have every reason to believe that the construction of the new Children’s will begin during the winter of 2009.
